LAS VEGAS AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM & CULTURAL CENTER ENGAGEMENT

Overview
FordMomentum! led an inclusive community engagement effort to shape the vision for a proposed African American Museum in Las Vegas’s Historic Westside. The goal was to understand what the community wants—and needs—from a museum that authentically reflects its history, culture, and future.

Through research, listening, and culturally grounded outreach, the project identified community values, priorities, and cultural assets to support a museum concept built for long-term relevance and sustainability.

  • Community-Led Research
Using the Standard of LOVE (STOLO) methodology, we conducted market research, listening sessions, and surveys to capture both qualitative and quantitative insights. This work clarified the community’s language, values, and level of interest.

    Clear Engagement Strategy
The engagement focused on five core goals:

    • Awareness: Building understanding of the Historic Westside plan

    • Education: Explaining the purpose and role of a community-centered museum

    • Feedback: Collecting input from residents, community leaders, and city staff

    • Endorsement: Activating trusted local voices through an Ambassador program

    • Action: Directing people to take surveys and participate in meetings

    Stakeholder Alignment
Key community stakeholders were identified and engaged early to ensure communications reflected local standards, trust, and priorities.

    • A comprehensive communications and engagement strategy

    • Online, phone, and printed community surveys

    • An interactive museum-themed digital game to boost participation

    • A cohesive creative campaign aligned with the Historic Westside identity

    • A community Ambassador Program with 15 trusted local leaders

    • Digital, social, radio, and on-the-ground outreach materials

    • Established a strong foundation for community-driven development

    • Engaged key stakeholders and residents in shaping the museum vision

    • Clarified community values related to identity, dignity, economic opportunity, and justice

    • Created a sustainable engagement model rooted in local leadership

    • Delivered actionable insights, language, and tools to guide the City of Las Vegas through the next phase of planning
