Ditching the Jargon:Clear Communication Is a Radical Act
Plain language removes barriers and expands participation.
I know we’re in the business of asking people what they want, but have you ever opened a public survey or meeting invite and thought, “Is this written for me… or for someone else?” You’re not alone.
So much public communication is packed with jargon, acronyms, and technical language that quietly tells people: this isn’t really for you. That confusion isn’t accidental—it’s a barrier. And removing barriers is a radical act of love.
In the Standard of LOVE, the Language (Literacy) pillar is about making sure people understand the systems, rights, and decisions that affect their lives. When people can’t understand the message, they can’t meaningfully participate—no matter how many engagement boxes get checked.
That’s why clear, plain, culturally relevant language matters so much. Our Strategic Communications Framework and Public Invitation templates force a simple but powerful shift:
Why does this matter?
What decision is being made?
How will people’s input actually be used?
When institutions answer those questions clearly, they’re not “dumbing things down.” They’re opening the door. They’re saying: you belong here. Be clear that this is what institutional love looks like in practice—making understanding the norm, not the exception. I’ll see you in practice!
